What to Ask For at Your First Hair Appointment (So You Actually Get What You Want)

Walking into a new salon and trying to explain what you want to someone you've never met is genuinely hard. You might not know the technical terms. You might have a vague feeling more than a specific vision. Or you know exactly what you want but worry it won't translate. All of that is normal. Here's how to make it easier.

Describe the feeling, not just the look
You don't need to know salon terminology. What actually helps is describing how you want your hair to feel and function. "More bounce and volume" tells us something useful. "A sleeker look that's easy to manage in the morning" tells us something too. Saying "I want a trim" tells us almost nothing.
For colour, think about tone direction — warm (golden, caramel, copper) vs. cool (ash, icy, neutral) — and intensity (subtle and natural vs. noticeable and bold). Tell us what you currently hate about your hair. That's often more useful than describing what you want, because it tells us what to avoid.
Bring photos
A good reference photo shortens the consultation by ten minutes and reduces the chance of miscommunication significantly. Bring a few images of things you like, and if you have them, things you don't. Then explain what specifically you're drawn to in each one. "I love the way the highlights frame her face" is more helpful than just handing over a photo and saying "this."
Try to find reference photos of people with similar hair texture to yours. A style on very thick, coarse hair can look quite different on fine hair, and it's better to know that upfront. Photos are a starting point for the conversation, not a blueprint for an exact copy.
Be realistic about what's achievable
This is where an honest stylist earns their value. Your natural hair type, texture, density, and current condition all affect what's possible in a single appointment. Going from dark brown to platinum blonde usually takes more than one session — trying to rush that risks real damage. A super sleek bob on naturally curly hair is going to require daily effort to maintain.
We'll tell you what's achievable, what might need multiple appointments, and where we might need to adjust the goal slightly to protect your hair. That's not us talking you out of something. It's us making sure you leave with something you can actually work with.
Ask questions
The consultation is your chance to get information. Some questions worth asking:
- Is this achievable with my hair in its current condition?
- What will the grow-out look like, and how often would I need to come back?
- What does the maintenance at home look like?
- What products would you recommend?
- How long will this take, and what's the estimated cost?
You won't be annoying anyone by asking these. We'd rather answer them upfront than have you leave unclear about what you're committing to.
Tell us your hair's history
If you've had any chemical services — colour, bleach, perm, relaxer — we need to know, even if it was years ago and even if it was a box dye from the drugstore. Chemical history changes how hair responds to new treatments. If we apply a colour formula without knowing there's old box dye in the ends, the result can be unpredictable.
We're not going to judge what you've done before. We just need the information so we can make good decisions about what to do next.
Speak up during the appointment
If something feels off partway through, say so. It's much easier to adjust mid-appointment than after everything is done. "Could we take a little more off?" or "I was hoping for more texture here" — those are easy conversations when we're still in the middle of things.
At the end, when we show you the finished result, give us your honest reaction. If you love it, we're glad to hear it. If something isn't quite right, tell us while you're still in the chair. And if you get home and something is bothering you, reach out within a week. We stand behind our work.
