How to Keep Your Hair Colour Looking Fresh Between Salon Visits

Colour appointments take time, money, and a fair bit of trust. The last thing you want is to watch that fresh shade fade out in two weeks. The good news: a few simple habits at home can make a real difference in how long your colour holds.

Hair colour maintenance

Use the right shampoo and conditioner

This is where most people quietly sabotage themselves. Regular shampoos often contain sulfates that strip pigment with every wash, leaving your colour looking dull before it should. Colour-safe or sulfate-free formulas are much gentler on treated hair and help keep the cuticle sealed so the pigment stays put.

Professional-grade products tend to have higher concentrations of protective ingredients than what you'll find at the drugstore. Look for UV filters in the formula too — they matter more than most people realize. More on that in a moment.

Protect your hair from heat

Flat irons, curling wands, blow dryers — they're hard on colour. High heat forces the cuticle open, which lets colour molecules escape. It can also cause chemical shifts in the dye itself, which is often where that unwanted brassiness comes from.

A heat protectant (spray or cream) applied before any heat styling creates a barrier that slows all of this down. Apply it to damp hair before blow-drying, and again to dry hair before hot tools. And try dropping your tool temperature a notch — your hair will respond better than you expect, and your colour will last noticeably longer.

Sunlight fades colour too

UV rays break down the chemical bonds in hair dye the same way they bleach other things. Blondes go brassy, reds go dull, and cool tones shift warm. This is obvious in summer, but winter sun reflects off snow and has the same effect.

A wide-brimmed hat is still your best option for extended time outdoors. Beyond that, look for leave-in conditioners or styling sprays with built-in UV filters. If you're spending a lot of time near water, where UV reflection is stronger, a dedicated hair UV spray is worth having.

Wash less, and think about your water

Every wash lifts a little pigment, even with the gentlest shampoo. Stretching your wash days from daily to every second or third day can genuinely extend your colour's life. Dry shampoo is useful here — it absorbs oil and refreshes roots so you can go longer between full washes.

Water quality is something a lot of people in Winnipeg don't think about, but it matters. Hard water contains calcium and magnesium that build up on the hair shaft, making colour look dull and brassy. Blondes end up looking yellowed, reds fade faster, and brunettes can look muddy. A shower filter is an easy fix — they attach directly to your showerhead and remove a lot of those minerals before they reach your hair. A clarifying shampoo used every few weeks can also help remove buildup, but always follow it with a deep conditioning treatment. If the problem is persistent, ask your stylist about in-salon mineral removal treatments.

Use toning products at home

For blondes, silvers, and some brunettes, warmth creeps back in between appointments. Purple shampoo neutralizes yellow tones in blonde and silver hair. Blue shampoo works on orange and brassy tones in brunette hair.

The key is not to overdo it. Once or twice a week is plenty, or just when you start noticing the shift. Leave it on for a minute or two at most — porous hair can pick up a purple or blue tint if you push it too long. These products are a great maintenance tool, but they're temporary. For a proper tone refresh, an in-salon gloss or toner will always give you a more even, lasting result.

Know when it's time to come back in

With good home care, you can stretch your appointments, but not indefinitely. Most full colour and highlight services need a touch-up around the 6–8 week mark. Balayage and ombré styles have a softer grow-out and can often go 10–12 weeks.

Watch for the signs: roots becoming distracting, overall colour looking flat, or tones that your purple shampoo can't keep up with anymore. Coming in before things get too far gone actually makes the appointment easier (and less expensive) than waiting for a full correction.
