Getting the Whole Family's Hair Done: Tips for a Smooth Salon Visit

Bringing the whole family in at once is one of those things that sounds chaotic but, with a bit of planning, actually works really well. You get it done in one trip, everyone leaves looking great, and you're not scheduling three separate appointments across three separate weeks.
Here's what makes it go smoothly.

Book It as a Family Visit, Not as Separate Appointments
When you call, say it's a family visit. That one detail helps a lot. It lets us match stylists to appointments, stack the timing properly, and make sure nobody's sitting around for an hour waiting.
Mornings tend to work best for younger kids. They're rested, they haven't burned through their patience yet, and there are fewer people in the salon. If you can avoid nap time and the pre-lunch hunger window, you're already ahead. Consecutive appointments usually flow better than trying to get everyone in chairs at the exact same time, though if we have multiple stylists free, we can often overlap.
What to Expect at Different Ages
A toddler's first proper haircut typically happens somewhere between one and two years old, once there's enough hair to actually shape. At that stage, simple trims or a quick tidy-up is plenty. The goal isn't a complex style. It's a positive experience they won't dread repeating.
School-age kids (roughly six to twelve) can handle longer appointments and usually have opinions worth hearing. They might want layers, a specific part, or something they saw on a friend. Bring those ideas. It makes for a better conversation.
Teenagers are a different situation entirely. They often want to try something real, whether that's a more complex cut, styling advice, or colour. For any chemical services on a minor, we do a proper consultation with both the teen and the parent before anything happens. We want everyone comfortable with the plan.
The First Haircut
If it's your child's first time, a little groundwork at home goes a long way. Talk it through in plain terms. Tell them the stylist uses special scissors to make their hair neat, that it doesn't hurt, and that it's quick. Some kids respond well to books or short videos showing other children getting their hair cut. Some want to bring a toy or a small snack for comfort. All of that is fine.
We're used to wiggles. Don't worry about your child being perfectly still. We work with them.
We can also save a small lock of hair and give them a little first haircut certificate to mark the occasion, if you'd like that.
Waiting Without the Meltdown
Even with good scheduling, there will sometimes be a short wait. A small bag with a coloring book, a picture book, or a tablet and headphones handles most situations. A snack helps too. If you have a toddler who really can't sit still, one parent can take them for a short walk while the other waits, and we'll text when we're ready.
One thing worth doing before you arrive: let your kids know there might be a wait. A heads-up takes the edge off. "We might watch a show while we wait for your turn" lands much better than a surprise.
Talking to the Stylist
Before you come in, get a loose sense of what each family member wants. For younger children, you'll often need to translate their ideas into practical terms. "I want it like my friend Emma's" is helpful context, but the stylist will also need to know the hair type and any quirks.
Tell us what you know. Fine hair, thick hair, prone to tangles, sensitive scalp, grows fast, grows sideways. The more we understand the hair we're working with, the better the result. Your kids can talk directly to the stylist if they want to. We encourage it.
Ask about aftercare too, especially for kids, where one good product recommendation can save a lot of morning stress.
Why a Family-Friendly Salon Is Worth It
A chain salon can get you in and out, but you'll probably see a different stylist every time, and the approach to kids' hair tends to be rushed. At European Hair Design, the stylists are experienced across all ages and genuinely good with children. We're not just tolerating the small ones while we wait for the adult clients.
When you come back a few times, we get to know your family. We know your daughter won't sit still unless she has something to watch. We know your son wants the same fade as last time but a bit shorter on top. That consistency makes every visit easier than the one before.
We'd love to look after your whole family. Come find us at European Hair Design, 2116 Pembina Hwy, Winnipeg.
